Tempered or Annealed Glass
Tempered glass is about four times stronger than Annealed glass. Prior to tempering the glass, it is “shimmed” which is a light sanding process along all of the edges.
This makes it easier to handle, but it can still have sharp edges. When in doubt wear gloves. Once tempered, if broken, under stress it will break into small granular chunks rather than the jagged shards that annealed glass will. Any cutting or grinding must be done prior to tempering.
Glass is then thoroughly washed before tempering.
Glass is is laid out and inserted into the machine where it is heated to the right temperature.
When it comes out it is Red hot.
The machine then cools it and then it comes out on the other side ready to go.
While tempered glass is much stronger, the weak point is at the corners. So when handling tempered glass watch that you do not bump any of the corners.
Tempered glass is used in high traffic areas, low windows and many other area where the likelihood of the glass breaking is higher; therefore reducing the likelihood of injury from broken glass. There are codes in place that will require it: Talk to your builder/general contractor to find out which of your windows or doors will require it.

Laminate Glass
Like tempered glass, Laminated glass is also a type of safety glass. It is layered with plastic and toughened glass. If the glass shatters, the pieces stay intact because of the middle layer of laminate that has bonded with the glass (through a special heating process). You will see the characteristic “spider web” shaped crack typically occurs in laminated glass. which is commonly used in auto windshields.
Laminated glass also comes in selected color options:
